Ifá is one of the most revered Orisha in Yoruba tradition. He represents wisdom, knowledge, foresight, and spiritual guidance. Ifá is the deity of divination, helping humans to understand destiny, make informed choices, and connect with spiritual truths. Through Ifá, people gain access to divine knowledge about their past, present, and future.
Yoruba Belief about Ifá
In Yoruba cosmology, Ifá is regarded as the embodiment of divine wisdom and prophecy. He is the one who knows the secrets of creation and understands the destiny (ayanmo) of every being. The Yoruba believe that nothing happens without Ifá’s knowledge, and his guidance is sought through the divination system known as Ifá divination (or ẹ̀sìn Ifá).
Ifá divination is performed by trained priests called Babaláwo (“father of secrets”) or Ìyánífá (female priest). Using sacred instruments such as the opelé chain or ikin (sacred palm nuts), they interpret verses from the Odu Ifá, the sacred texts containing thousands of poetic teachings, proverbs, and wisdom.

• Guidance in decision-making:
Before marriages, naming ceremonies, travels, or important events, Ifá is consulted.
• Healing and protection:
Ifá prescribes sacrifices (ẹbọ) and remedies for sickness or misfortune.

Ifá and Other Orisha
Ifá is closely connected to Orunmila, who is considered the personification of wisdom and often seen as the Orisha behind the Ifá system. While Orunmila is the deity, Ifá refers to the sacred system of divination and knowledge. Together, they represent the highest level of spiritual insight in Yoruba belief.
Oriki Ifá (Praise Poetry of Ifá)
This section is dedicated to Oríkì Ifá, the eulogies and praise poetry used to honor Ifá. Oríkì plays an essential role in invoking the deity’s wisdom and calling his presence during divination.
