Yoruba Herbal Treatment for Fibroid

Among the Yoruba people, Oyun Iju (fibroid) is recognized as a serious condition that affects a woman’s womb. It is believed to arise when blood and inner warmth are trapped in the womb, forming lumps that cause pain and irregularities. Yoruba traditional healers have long understood this problem, even before modern medical terms came into use. They observed how it could hinder conception, cause heavy bleeding, or lead to discomfort in the lower abdomen.
agbo oyun iju to treat fibroidIn Yoruba traditional belief, the womb is seen as the seat of womanhood, fertility, and vitality. When the natural flow of blood and energy is disturbed, the womb becomes blocked or swollen, giving rise to conditions like Oyun Iju. The use of Agbo Ọ̀yún Ìjù—a carefully prepared herbal medicine—was developed to dissolve internal swellings, regulate menstrual flow, and restore normal womb function without surgery.

This traditional remedy combines roots, leaves, and barks that balance the body’s heat, improve blood circulation, and purify the womb. Women who used this preparation in the past often testified to relief from pain, lighter menstruation, and improved chances of conception. It remains one of the most used Yoruba herbal approaches for treating fibroid and related reproductive issues.

Symptoms Observed by Our Forefathers
Our forefathers identified Oyun Iju (fibroid) through physical and behavioral signs even before modern medical scans existed. Some of the noticeable symptoms include:
•  Constant or severe lower abdominal pain
•  Abnormal enlargement or swelling of the lower belly
•  Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
•  Irregular menstrual cycles or spotting between periods
•  Difficulty in conceiving despite repeated attempts
•  Pain during sexual intercourse
•  Frequent urination due to pressure on the bladder
•  General body weakness and fatigue
•  Backache or pain around the waist region
•  Hardness or lump-like feel in the stomach area

How Our Forefathers Treated Fibroid in the Past

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
1.  Purification of the Blood –
The herbal mixture first works to cleanse the blood system, removing impurities and thickened clots.
2.  Reduction of Womb Swelling –
Gradual shrinkage of fibroid tissues occurs as herbs improve blood flow and dissolve internal lumps.
3.  Restoration of Normal Menstrual Flow –
The treatment helps the woman regain a balanced menstrual cycle—neither too heavy nor too scanty.
4.  Strengthening of the Womb –
Roots and leaves that tone and strengthen the womb are often added to ensure that after recovery, the reproductive system remains firm and functional.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
•  Approach to Healing:
Yoruba medicine focuses on natural purification and balance, while modern medicine often resorts to surgical removal.
•  Long-Term Benefit:
Traditional treatment works from the root cause and helps restore the womb’s strength, while modern methods may only remove visible lumps.
•  Natural Ingredients:
Yoruba medicine relies on roots, leaves, and barks with no chemical additives, while modern treatment may include synthetic drugs and hormonal therapies.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
•  Pregnancy and Lactation:
Some potent herbs are unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Forefathers insisted these must never be used during this period.
•  Underlying Conditions:
Individuals with kidney, liver, or chronic health issues should not take strong decoctions without proper guidance from a knowledgeable herbalist.
•  Source Quality:
Plants grown with chemicals, pesticides, or harvested from polluted areas can harm instead of heal. The source must always be trusted.
