Among the Yoruba people, the feet are regarded as one of the most powerful parts of the human body. They symbolize progress, destiny, and movement — the means by which a person walks through life. It is often said, “Ẹsẹ ló ń gbé ènìyàn lọ s’òwò àti orí ire”, meaning “The feet carry a person to fortune and success.” Therefore, when the feet become diseased or weakened, it is believed that one’s progress can also be hindered.Ogun Jomi-Jomi Ẹsẹ is a Yoruba traditional medicine designed to treat what is known today as Athlete’s Foot Disease — a fungal infection that affects the skin of the feet, especially between the toes (this is otherwise called Kanyan). In Yoruba belief, this condition, called jomi-jomi ẹsẹ, was seen as a health problem. People believed that when a person’s feet are constantly itching, peeling, or sore, it could indicate both poor hygiene or an attempt to “burn” the path of success.
Yoruba elders, therefore, took this condition seriously. They combined curative herbs to restore movement. The treatment aimed not just at removing the infection but also at ensuring that the afflicted person could walk freely.

1) Persistent itching between the toes, especially after removing shoes.
2) Cracked, scaly, or peeling skin around the feet and sole.
3) Burning or stinging sensations on the affected area.
4) Bad odor from the feet due to fungal infection.
5) Discoloration or whitish patches between the toes.
6) Small fluid-filled blisters that sometimes burst and form sores.
7) Pain or difficulty walking when the infection spreads.
8) In some cases, thickened toe-nails or nail infections.
How Our Forefathers Treated Athlete’s Foot in the Past
Treatment of jomi-jomi ẹsẹ in Yoruba traditional medicine focused on healing. Healers used herbs with strong antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, along with elements believed to “cool” and purify the affected area.
• Herbal preparation:
Crushed barks and roots were ground into fine powder, mixed with palm kernel oil (epo pupa) or shea butter (òrí), and applied directly on the affected area to dry out moisture and restore the skin. Notable leaf with high potency in treating Jomi-Jomi Ese include:
1) Ewe Ajefawo
2) Ewe Arere
3) Ewe Asunwọn
4) Ewe Àta
5) Ewe Ayin
6) Ewe Botuje
7) Ewe Irawo-ile
8) Ewe Orombo Wewe

GET A-Z YORUBA HERBS PDF #3KThe Healing and Preparation Process
a) Collection of Herbs –
The herbs were gathered early in the morning when the dew was still fresh, believed to hold strong healing moisture. Each herb was plucked while reciting protective words to awaken its power.
b) Cleansing and Combination –
Roots, leaves, and barks were washed thoroughly and combined according to traditional ratio — some to dry moisture, others to soothe burning and itching.
c) Boiling and Preservation –
The herbs were boiled in clean clay pots, not metal, as clay was believed to maintain natural potency. The mixture was stored in calabashes or jars for daily use.
d) Application –
The affected person washed their feet morning and night, dried them well, then applied the ointment or soaked again in warm herbal water until complete healing occurred.
Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
• Source of Healing – Yoruba healing relies on natural herbs, while modern medicine depends on antifungal creams or pills.
• Duration and Effect – Traditional remedies heal gradually but thoroughly, strengthening the skin and blood, while modern methods often give quick relief but can allow relapse.
• Spiritual Understanding – Yoruba medicine treats jomi-jomi ẹsẹ as physical ailment, ensuring that healing covers every dimension of life.
Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
1) Pregnancy and Lactation – Pregnant or nursing mothers should not use strong herbal soaks or smoke purification unless approved by a traditional healer.
2) Underlying Conditions – People with diabetes or open wounds must seek caution before applying herbal pastes to prevent complications.
3) Source Quality – Herbs must come from clean, chemical-free environments. Contaminated or adulterated herbs can worsen the infection instead of healing it.
