Yoruba Herbal Medicine for Correcting Fetus Position

Among the Yoruba, pregnancy is considered as remarkable stage of womanhood. It is a period when the woman’s body parts must be in full harmony. However, there are times when the fetus inside the womb remains unusually still, refuses to move, or stays in an incorrect position. This condition, known in Yoruba traditional observation as “Ọyún tí kò ń yípo,” was seen as a warning sign that the pregnancy might be in distress. Our forefathers in Yoruba land believed that balance must be maintained to ensure safe delivery, and this is where Ogun Ki Oyun Le Parada played a crucial role.
ogun ki oyun le paradaYoruba healers recognized that the movement of a child in the womb symbolizes life and connection between the unborn and the mother. When the baby’s motion stopped or became weak, it was a sign that something — whether physical, emotional, or metaphysical — needed to be addressed immediately. Hence, herbal preparations were made to restore vitality to the fetus, strengthen the womb, and calm the mother’s body so that normal movement could resume.

Symptoms Observed by Our Forefathers
When a fetus was not moving properly or stayed still in the womb, Yoruba midwives and healers looked out for the following signs:
1) The pregnant woman reports that the baby’s movement has stopped or reduced drastically.
2) A heavy or tight feeling in the lower abdomen.
3) Unusual silence or calmness in the womb over several days.
4) Loss of appetite, restlessness, or weakness in the woman.

How Our Foremothers Treated Fetal Immobility in the Past
Traditional Yoruba women trusted herbal wisdom. Remedies for ọyún tí kò parada included herbs that strengthened the womb, improved blood flow, and relaxed the abdominal muscles.
1. Herbal Decoction (Agbo)
Mild and womb-safe roots and leaves were boiled into a light herbal drink. The woman drank it in small portions to improve circulation and restore warmth to the womb. Find below some of the needed leaf used in preparation of Ogun Ki Oyun Le Parada

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
Preparation and administration of Ogun Ki Oyun Le Parada followed calm, intentional steps among Yoruba healers:
1) Morning Herb Collection: Herbs were gathered early in the morning, believed to hold stronger energy at that time.
2) Combination of Ingredients: Womb-strengthening and blood-reviving plants were mixed in accurate proportions.
3) Gentle Administration: The herbal decoction was given in small doses, avoiding strong purgatives or bitter herbs that could harm the pregnancy.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
• Natural Ingredients: Traditional healers used mild herbs, safe oils, and prayers rather than synthetic drugs.
• Cultural Balance: Yoruba methods encourage emotional calmness and family involvement, while modern hospitals often rely on machines and isolated environments.

Safety First: Important Considerations
1) Pregnant women should never self-administer herbs without guidance from an experienced traditional healer or midwife.
2) Herbs used must be mild and womb-safe — no purgative or bitter roots.
3) If movement does not return after herbal care, immediate medical attention should be sought to avoid risk to mother or child.
