Evergreen Oriki Olorun in Yoruba with Meaning in English

You are welcome to another reflection on the greatness of God Almighty, known by the Yoruba in many beautiful names. In this article, we honour Him as Eleda, meaning The Creator. The Yoruba people hold creation in respect, from the smallest plant in the forest to the vast heavens above. All these testify to the work of the Creator, the One who brings all beings into existence and sustains them with His breath.

When the Yoruba call God Eleda, they are confessing that no one else can create out of nothing, no one else can give true life, and no one else can hold the destiny of human beings in their hands. The rivers, mountains, skies, animals, and human lives all stand as living evidence that Eleda is both powerful and kind. This name does not only speak of His work in the past, but of His ongoing care today — for creation continues to live and thrive because He sustains it.

This article focuses on God as Eleda, the Creator of all beings, His kindness revealed in the act of creation, and the way the Yoruba honour Him through daily praise and oriki.

The Meaning of Eleda
The name Eleda is rich in meaning. It is formed from the root word da, which means “to create” or “to bring forth.” Thus, Eleda is the One who formed human beings, who gave them their unique destiny (ayanmo), and who placed them in a world prepared with all that they would need. To say God is Eleda is to affirm that everything visible and invisible depends on Him for life and existence.

The Act of Creation as Kindness
The Yoruba see God’s kindness displayed in the very fact of creation. He did not need to create the world, but He chose to bring forth life. He created humans with the ability to think, speak, and worship. He filled the land with food, water, and shelter. Every gift of nature — rain, sunlight, and fertile soil — is a sign of His kindness toward humanity.

God’s Ongoing Work as Eleda
Creation is not an event of the past only; it continues in the present. The birth of a child, the growth of a seed into a tree, and the constant renewal of life each day are living proofs that Eleda is still at work. His power sustains creation moment by moment, and His mercy allows it to continue despite human failures.

Oriki Eleda
In Yoruba culture, oriki to God as Eleda is a way of praising Him as the Giver of life and the Source of all existence. Reciting His oriki reminds us that our lives are not our own but gifts from the Creator. Yoruba elders say that giving oriki to Eleda each morning draws favour and sets the heart in order for the day.

Why We Must Honour Eleda Daily
•  To thank Him for the breath of life renewed each morning.
•  To recognise His hand in the creation that surrounds us.
•  To remain humble, knowing our existence depends on Him.
•  To teach our children that every blessing comes from the Creator.

Living as God’s Creation
To acknowledge Eleda as Creator means living responsibly. It calls us to care for nature, to respect other human beings, and to walk in gratitude for each new day. It also reminds us that we are not self-made but are held by the hand of the Creator.

Conclusion
Eleda, the Creator of all beings, is the One who gave life to everything and continues to sustain it. His majesty is seen in the vastness of creation, His supremacy in the order of the universe, and His kindness in the daily renewal of life.
