Oriki Eledumare: Yoruba way of Praising God with English Interpretations

Welcome to this exhibition of the greatness of God Almighty, the One known in Yoruba thought by many names: Olorun, Olodumare, Eleda, Aseda and more. Each of these names reveals His nature — Lord of the Heavens, the Supreme One, the Creator, and the Source of thanksgiving. In Yoruba tradition, He is acknowledged as the absolute ruler whose power, mercy, and kindness sustain the world. This article will shine light on His majesty, His supremacy, and His unending care for creation.

The Majesty of God
The Yoruba recognize the majesty of Olorun as the grandeur that cannot be measured or compared. His presence fills heaven and earth, yet no one can fully comprehend Him. Kings, chiefs, and rulers are respected in Yoruba society, but all authority is understood to come from God. His majesty inspires reverence, humility, and constant awe.

The Supremacy of God
God is not simply powerful; He is supreme. Supremacy means He is above all beings, above all powers, and above all knowledge. The Yoruba believe that nothing happens outside His will. Every living soul depends on Him for breath and survival. Unlike earthly rulers who rise and fall, God’s supremacy is eternal and cannot be challenged.

The Kindness of God
Beyond majesty and supremacy, Olorun is also deeply kind. Yoruba people often say that God’s goodness is seen daily in the gift of life, protection in danger, food on the table, and peace within the home. His kindness is steady — not only for the righteous but for all creation. He sends rain, sunshine, and blessings that no one can buy.

Oriki Olorun
Oriki, in Yoruba culture, is a special way of praising with words of honour. To give God His oriki is to acknowledge His greatness and to remind ourselves that we depend on Him. It is written that when one calls God by His names, He shows favour and responds with mercy. For this reason, believers are encouraged to recite the oriki of Olorun every day — in the morning, before rest, and in times of thanksgiving. Why We Must Honour God Daily
•  To remember the source of life and blessing.
•  To remain humble before His majesty.
•  To give thanks for His mercy that renews each day.
•  To keep our hearts focused on what matters most — God above all.

Living Under God’s Rule
Recognizing God’s majesty and supremacy is not only belief but practice. A person who acknowledges Olorun daily will:

•  Give thanks before and after work.
•  Treat others fairly, knowing all are God’s creation.
•  Trust God in difficult times, instead of despair.
•  Teach children to call on God’s names with reverence.

Conclusion
The Yoruba understanding of God Almighty presents Him as majestic, supreme, and kind. He rules the universe, provides for His creation, and receives praise through oriki.
