Ewe Iranje is one of the well-respected medicinal plants in Yoruba traditional healing, valued for its strong restorative and cleansing properties. Across many Yoruba communities, Ewe Iranje is used as a household remedy for common ailments such as malaria, typhoid, and stomach disorders. The plant is known to purify the blood, regulate internal temperature, and support recovery from long-term sicknesses. It is one of those plants Yoruba elders describe as “ewe to n’gbani lowo arun gbogbo,” meaning “the leaf that assists in many illnesses.”
ewe iranjeFor centuries, traditional healers have used Ewe Iranje as part of herbal mixtures to fight feverish conditions and internal infections. It is often boiled with other herbs such as Ewe Ewuro (bitter leaf) and Ewe Asunwon to prepare strong decoctions that cleanse the system and stimulate appetite after illness. Ewe Iranje’s ability to restore body strength makes it especially useful for those recovering from malaria or typhoid.

Aside this physical healing properties, Ewe Iranje is also believed to possess mild spiritual cleansing power. In Yoruba spiritual practice, a person’s body and spirit are seen as connected; when one is weakened, the other must be cleansed and revived.
