Yoruba Oriki for the Most High God – Learn Yoruba Eulogies to Praise God

You are welcome to another article in this series honouring the greatness of the Almighty. Today we turn our focus to Olodumare, a name that carries weight and depth in Yoruba understanding. The word itself speaks of supremacy — the One above all, the Chief of existence, the absolute Authority. To call Him Olodumare is to recognise that everything begins with Him and ends with Him.

Among the Yoruba, Olodumare is described as the unquestionable source of power, wisdom, and life. Unlike earthly rulers who receive authority from councils, kingships, or inheritance, Olodumare’s authority is His own. He does not borrow it, He does not share it unwillingly, and He does not lose it over time. His rule is absolute, His decisions final, and His power unchallenged.

In this article, we will have a thought on what it means to confess God as Olodumare, the Supreme One, why the Yoruba hold this belief firmly, and how honouring Him daily through oriki strengthens faith and devotion.

The Meaning of Olodumare
The name Olodumare carries the idea of the “Owner of the fullness of power". Olodu-Omo-Are describes God as One who is complete in Himself, without lack, without need, and without rival. In Yoruba thought, Olodumare is not distant but supreme — near enough to give breath, yet above all creation.

The Supremacy of God
The supremacy of Olodumare means that no one can overrule Him. Kings may command armies, chiefs may direct people, and elders may give counsel, but none can command Olodumare. He is not bound by time, culture, or circumstance. His supremacy is revealed in creation itself — the vast sky, the unending seas, the mountains, and the breath of every living creature testify to His unmatched greatness.

The Kindness Within His Supremacy
Though Olodumare is supreme, He is also kind. His rule is not harsh but merciful. The Yoruba recognise His kindness in the way He provides for all people, regardless of wealth, tribe, or station. Rain falls on farms of both the rich and poor. Breath is given to both the strong and the weak. In His supremacy, Olodumare shows mercy that never fails.

Oriki Olodumare
In Yoruba culture, to give oriki to God is to offer words of praise that honour His supremacy. Oriki lifts the heart and keeps the tongue speaking truth: that Olodumare is above all and His rule cannot be contested. Yoruba elders say that anyone who daily gives God His oriki will find strength for the day and peace in the night. Easily memorize the below Oriki of God, it's simple and powerful...
